Leading by example.

Values

Our values signify our commitment to artists and the systemic change needed within arts ecologies. They frame our vision, goals, and approach to disability inclusion and diversity.

  • Artists and their work are valued and acknowledged.

We strive for increased respect, recognition, and visibility for diverse artists so their professional and creative contributions are valued and acknowledged.

  • Valuing creativity and progressive methodologies.

Artists are encouraged to participate and push boundaries, allowing them to engage at all levels, express themselves, define and build their artistic identity.

  • Advocating for the rights and aspirations of artists.

Our work challenges outdated paradigms that prevent artists from participating fully in the arts. We lead systemic change to influence policymakers and redefine the arts.

  • Inclusive and collaborative approaches are key.

Collaborative relationships are cultivated with artists, studios, colleagues, partners and the broader industry, fostering expansive connections, learnings and creative outcomes.

  • Committed to agile learning and leading by example.

By prioritising inclusion, adaptability and learning, we continuously improve the way we work, staying open to new ideas and feedback, our approach will inspire change.

  • Artists make decisions for themselves and their work.

Artists make informed choices that positively impact their practice, free from undue influence, having autonomy and freedom to shape their development according to their preferences, values and needs.

Disability Inclusion

Supporting the social model of disability, where societal barriers cause disability, and striving for disability inclusion based on solidarity and disability justice.

  • Jump Left is dedicated to enhancing accessibility in our physical and online spaces for artists and audiences. We ensure easy-to-find step-free entrances and incorporate braille signage. Our communication channels clearly outline venue details for our space and the external spaces we work in. We provide a quiet space for pauses and breaks and adjust furniture for accessibility. Artist and public feedback is welcomed and acted upon. Safety measures are prioritised for collaborators and visitors.

  • Jump Left prioritises access and inclusion in its creative programming by supporting artists from the inception of their ideas, providing pathways for artists to develop and present their work on their terms. Our approach involves working closely with artists, ensuring all projects are as supported and accessible as possible, consulting with the community for access services, and making expressions of interest (EOIs) accessible through various formats and flexible submission options. We offer digital opportunities to reach diverse audiences in Naarm [Melbourne], Australia and beyond.

  • Jump Left is committed to inclusivity by hiring more Deaf and Disabled individuals across roles. We prioritise discussing and accommodating access needs, advocating for Disability Inclusion, and creating a safe workplace. Strategies include inclusive hiring practices and accommodating access requests. We aim to create a safe environment for all, including immunocompromised individuals.

  • Jump Left prioritises ongoing training and learning opportunities to foster a safe and inclusive environment for artists, staff, and audiences. We actively work to eliminate ableist attitudes and discriminatory practices. Training sessions, delivered by Deaf and disabled trainers, cover topics including, but not limited to, autism awareness, cultural safety, and basic Auslan. Staff can also access diverse perspectives from disabled artists and communities.

  • Jump Left promotes inclusion and participation in the Deaf and Disabled community and focuses on accessible communication. We've achieved WCAG 2.0 web accessibility, consistently use access symbols on our platforms, and offer varied communication methods. Moving forward, we aim to build relationships with Deaf and Disabled individuals, diversify our audience, and establish Jump Left as a trusted venue for accessibility. Our strategies include sharing information in accessible formats, incorporating access symbols and descriptions, providing detailed access information, seeking feedback from the community, utilising physical promotion methods, and offering multiple booking options.

Cultural Diversity

Underscoring the importance of representation, access, and global exchange and that all artists must have equal opportunities to contribute and be celebrated in the arts.

  • Jump Left aims to empower people from diverse backgrounds, including people with disabilities, neurodivergent, intellectually and learning disabled artists. By providing a platform for these artists to showcase their work, Jump Left promotes cultural diversity within the arts sector. This representation helps challenge existing norms and stereotypes, fostering a more inclusive and diverse cultural landscape.

  • Jump Left recognises the barriers that artists with disabilities face in accessing professional services, spaces for connection, and resources. By creating supportive and inclusive environments, both online and in-person, Jump Left ensures that these artists have equal opportunities to participate in the arts community. This commitment to accessibility and inclusion contributes to a more diverse and equitable cultural sector.

  • Jump Left not only supports artists locally in Naarm, Melbourne, but also aims to connect with global audiences, peak bodies, and policymakers. By sharing experiences, learnings, and artistic creations internationally, Jump Left facilitates cross-cultural dialogue and exchange. This global perspective enriches the cultural diversity of the arts ecosystem and promotes understanding and appreciation of diverse artistic expressions.

  • Through its activities, Jump Left seeks to effect positive societal change by advocating for more diverse, accessible, and sustainable arts ecosystems. By partnering with policymakers and peak bodies, we aim to influence broader systemic changes that promote cultural diversity and inclusion in the arts. This advocacy work is crucial for creating lasting impact and transforming the arts to be more welcoming and representative of diverse voices.
