Where the Art Is (2021)

After a year-long hiatus, APA’s gallery moved from its Northcote location, which continued as a studio, to a freshly remodelled space at Collingwood Yards. The inaugural exhibition Where the Art Is ruminated on the year that was while firmly looking to the future. The exhibition showcased collections of thought-provoking and timely new work by ten exciting Melbourne artists: Alan Constable, Lisa Reid, Chris O’Brien, Cathy Staughton, Adrian Lazzaro, Samantha Ashdown, Boris Cipusev, Mark Smith, Warren O’Brien and Julian Martin.

Art et al. (2020-current)

APA, Jennifer Lauren Gallery + Slominsky Projects

Curators: Jen Gilbert, Sim Luttin, Lisa Slominski

Art et al. is an AU/UK collaborative initiative conceived by our founder for APA in partnership with two key UK collaborators, Jennifer Gilbert (Jennifer Lauren Gallery) and Lisa Slominski (Slominski Projects). Launched in 2021, Art et al. is a digital curatorial platform created to place Australian, UK, and international artists with disabilities and their studios at the forefront of contemporary art. The project was supported by Creative Australia, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the British Council, and the Aesop Foundation

Group Show (2021-2022)

ARTS PROJECT AUSTRALIA & ACCA
VENUE: Billboards, Naarm, Melbourne

A public art offering that considered collaboration, visibility, connectivity, and access. The artists were Eden Menta, Jenny Ngo, James MacSporran, Anthony Romagnano, Joey Balliro, Boris Cipusev, Mikaela Stafford, Rhys Lee, Natalie Jurrjens, and Jacquie Munoz.

Mapping Our Future
Solo & Group Shows (2020)

ARTS PROJECT AUSTRALIA
VENUE: Online

APA postponed its in-person exhibition program in 2021 when COVID-19 hit and launched a dynamic weekly global online exhibition series to maintain momentum and support artists. The initiative delivered over 40 online solo and group exhibitions and projects featuring the work of 150 Melbourne creatives.

Our Life, Our World
Group Show (2019)

As part of CLIMARTE’s ART+CLIMATE =CHANGE festival, the show explored current environmental and social issues in our local and global environments. The vibrant and thought-provoking multidisciplinary group exhibition featured various APA artists.

Artists have a long history of drawing inspiration from popular culture, attitudes, ideas, images, and other phenomena presented in mainstream mass media. The show explored and celebrated these themes.

APA Booth (2018)

ARTS PROJECT AUSTRALIA
VENUE: ACCA, Naarm, Melbourne

The Arts Project booth at MAF at ACCA presented over 100 artworks, including significant collections of paintings, drawings, and sculpture installations by established artists Fulli Andrinopoulos, Samraing Chea, Alan Constable, and Julian Martin.

Leo Cussen: Golden Years
Survey (2017)

ARTS PROJECT AUSTRALIA
VENUE: APA, Naarm, Melbourne

The late Leo Cussen was a quintessential artist, having dedicated his life to creating expressive pastel artworks that revealed his love of film and popular culture. Golden Years was a retrospective of Cussen’s life work.

APA Room (2017)

ARTS PROJECT & DUTTON (room)
VENUE: The Establishment, Sydney

Twenty-two artists from APA featured their work in curated installations within a Penthouse suite. Over 200 artworks were rotated over the four-day event, presented in partnership with Dutton Gallery, New York.

Terry Williams: Rhythms of the Handmade | Survey (2016)

ARTS PROJECT AUSTRALIA (co-curated)
VENUE: APA, Naarm, Melbourne

This was the first survey exhibition of Terry Williams’ work over his twenty-seven-year career. The collection spanned drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, revealing a vast oeuvre beyond his much-loved hand-crafted soft sculptures.

Signature Style
Group Show (2016)

ARTS PROJECT AUSTRALIA
VENUE: APA, Naarm, Melbourne

Inspired by a trip to NYC, Signature Style presented large-scale paintings by APA artists whose work readily identified them as the creator. Artists were invited to paint an artwork or diptych on primed door panels in thier signature style.

Lisa Reid: The Devil’s in the Detail Survey (2015)

Over her 15-year career, Lisa Reid created highly detailed, intricate work, meticulously selecting family photographs and popular culture images, creating drawings, paintings, prints, ceramics, and digital media.

Film Program (2015)

GRAY STREET WORKSHOP
VENUE: Gray Street Workshop, Adelaide

Two film programs were curated as part of Gray Street’s 30th Anniversary ‘Theatre of Detail’, which aimed to provoke questions about creative art and craft practices, objects' relationship to the body, their boundaries, and innovative ways of thinking.

The project aimed to bring a range of exceptional people into the APA studio and to connect artists with local, well-known personalities. By building relationships with cultural figures, we expanded awareness of APA artists.

Alan Constable: Viewfinder
Survey (2011)

ARTS PROJECT AUSTRALIA (co-curator)
VENUE: APA, Naarm, Melbourne

Viewfinder showcased over 60 works spanning Alan Constable’s twenty-year career, offering fresh insights into his art. Despite being legally blind, Constable has produced an esteemed collection of ceramics and paintings, with his ceramic cameras gaining international acclaim.

VENUE: Warrnambool Art Gallery

The exhibition showcased a vibrant collection of figurative and abstract artwork by fourteen artists from APA, delving into the essence of humanity and what it is to be human. The exhibition explored our distinct ways of thinking, feeling, acting, and creating through a dynamic installation of paintings and drawings.

Field of Vision
Group Show (2007)

INDIANA UNIVERSITY (co-curator)
VENUE: Grunwald Gallery, Bloomington

This expansive international exhibition showcased contemporary art jewellery and hollowware and presented works by established and emerging artists. It highlighted the field's rich diversity and creativity across concepts, processes, materials, and forms.
